Many designers and other creatives dream about owning their own business, but the process of starting and running one can be intimidating. Our B-Side programming is designed to demystify the business side of creativity with advice from local industry leaders on creating a business entity; handling finances, accounting, and taxes; writing estimates, contracts, and creative briefs; project management; client relationships; and self-promotion/marketing.
The Money Game: Finances, Accounting & Taxes (the Full Monty)

Creative entrepreneurs are typically self-starters, but often receive less business training than other entrepreneurs—if they receive any at all. A creative entrepreneur who can handle business tasks will have more time and energy to focus on their craft. In this almost-full-day seminar, CPA Jessica Jones will review the basics of financial literacy for creatives, including recommendations for achieving financial goals and resources for creating a more organized business.
Here's how your day will look:
9:00am: Introduction to course, goals and icebreaker discussion
9:15: Discuss basic accounting principles and terminology (GAAP vs. tax vs. managerial)
- Definitions exercise
- Selecting a bookkeeping system (manual vs. automated, tracking functions, service vs. product oriented system concerns)
- Walk-through of example Quickbooks file
- Process discussion (Revenues/Invoicing and A/R, Asset-tracking, Inventory-tracking, Liabilities)
- Expense Tracking (A/P), Reimbursable vs. Cost of Goods Sold vs. Overhead
- Students fill out their own systems flow-chart using template in workbook
10:30: 5-10 minute break
10:40: Discuss AICPA principles of financial statements (Comparable, Relevant, Accurate, etc.)
- Prepare example financial statements (using materials in workbook)
11:30: Fixed and Variable-cost analysis and expense allocation for Managerial accounting decisions
- Practice exercises in workbook based on different industries
12pm: Break for lunch (please see below for details)*
12:30: Regroup and discuss plan for rest of afternoon
12:35: Discuss payroll bookkeeping and liabilities (Federal and State reporting responsibilities)
- Payroll preparation exercise and reporting schedule checklist
- Self-employment tax versus withholding (Contract vs. Employee from both sides)
- Quarterly Estimated Payments exercise
1:00: Discussion of Income tax liabilities (federal and state)
- Taxable income practice exercise (Gift/Loan/Wages/Income)
1:30: 5-minute break
1:35: Discussion of deductions and business expenses
- Manual schedule C preparation (Using Financial Statements prepared earlier)
2:15: Discussion of sales tax (Sales tax exercise in workbook on determining service vs. tangible property, and exceptions for taxable services)
- Manual preparation of sales tax report
2:45-3:00: Wrap-up, Q&A on any unresolved issues

Owners of several local design agencies will share their experiences launching and operating a creative company.
**Should I bring my own lunch?
Lunch is provided, but if you want to BYOL, make sure you bring it with you in the morning. Our schedule is set and doesn't accomodate leaving for lunch.
What should I bring to the event?
We will provide complimentary hot tea, coffee, and water. Save some trees and please bring a resueable mug for coffee/tea or water bottle for water.
Since you plan to attend several classes (wink...wink), we recommend attendees bring a notebook to take notes.
Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
What is your refund policy?
If you cancel:
Cancellations received within 3 days of the event may be eligible to receive a full refund less Eventbrite service fee.
Cancellations received 48 hours before the event will not be eligible for a refund.
Cancellations will be accepted via e-mail, and must be received by cancellation deadline.
Refund requests must include the name of the attendee and/or transaction number.
All refund requests must be made by the attendee or credit card holder.
Refunds will be credited back to the original credit card used for payment.
If we cancel:
AIGA Raleigh reserves the right to cancel an event due to low enrollment, inclement weather or other circumstances which would make the event non-viable. If AIGA Raleigh cancels an event, registrants will be offered a full refund minus the service fee. Should circumstances arise that result in the postponement of an event, registrants will have the option to either receive a full refund or transfer registration to the same event at the new, future date. If an event is canceled or postpone AIGA Raleigh will send an email via the email address used to register and be post to their Facebook Page.
